Day 3 of "The Gift" brings us to an instrumental from 9th wonder. I really enjoyed the direction Charles Hamilton was going in when he did it, but I wasn't convinced that he lyrically took it there. So I had my eye on this instrumental for a long time and finally put something together for it and I'm really glad I did. I really enjoy the bars - though it can feel like a random assortment of thoughts at a few points - I am proud of the last 4 before the hook takes it to the end.
"how can I be an artist if they paint me as a cynic
cause I'm such a critic, of these 'artists' with a gimmick
that someone else gave you now think for a minute
are you art or a nail trynna keep up an image?"
because... nails hold up paintings... get it? Basically I had to take a stab at artists who are allowing the money (be it a major label, people in their circle, or even the "fans") to dictate their image and how they present themselves to hip hop. I believe as artists we all have a responsibility to be true to ourselves - if your TRUE self is party all the time then be that but don't sit in an interview and complain about that lifestyle and continue to rap about that lifestyle. Be true to yourself. Thanks for listening to my ramblings.
